Taking Precautions Against Shaytan

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised people to take precautions against Shaytan by locking doors, tying knots, covering vessels and putting out lamps.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'z-Zubayr al-Makki from Jabir ibn Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Lock the door, tie the waterskin, turn the vessel over or cover it, and put out the lamp. Shaytan does not open a locked door or untie a tied knot, or uncover a vessel. A mouse may set fire to people's houses about them".

This hadith is about the importance of taking precautions against Shaytan. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised people to lock their doors, tie their waterskins, cover their vessels and put out their lamps in order to protect themselves from the mischief of Shaytan. He also warned that a mouse can set fire to people's houses if they are not careful enough with open flames or other sources of fire. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of our safety and security at all times and take necessary measures for it even when we are in our own homes. It also reminds us that even small creatures like mice can cause great destruction if we do not take proper care of our environment and belongings.
