Freeing an Illegitimate Child as Satisfaction for Slave Obligation

SUMMARY: It is permissible for a man to free an illegitimate child in order to satisfy the obligation of freeing a slave.

Malik related to me that he had heard that Fadala ibn Ubayd al- Ansari who was one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked whether it was permissible for a man who had to free a slave to free an illegitimate child. He said, "Yes, That will give satisfaction for him".

QUICK LESSONS:
Treat everyone with respect and kindness regardless of their status or background; Strive to fulfill your obligations even if it means going beyond what is expected from you; Do not discriminate against people based on their status or background; Free an illegitimate child in order to satisfy the obligation of freeing a slave.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the permissibility of freeing an illegitimate child in order to satisfy the obligation of freeing a slave. Fadala ibn Ubayd al-Ansari was one of the companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and he was asked whether it was permissible for someone who had to free a slave to free an illegitimate child instead. He answered that it would be acceptable and would give satisfaction for him. This hadith teaches us that we should not discriminate against people based on their status or background but rather treat everyone with respect and kindness regardless if they are legitimate or illegitimate children. We should also strive to fulfill our obligations even if it means going beyond what is expected from us in order to do so.
