Publicizing Findings

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Umar advises a man to publicize his finding and not keep it for himself.

Malik related to me from Nafi that a man found something and went to Abdullah ibn Umar and said to him, "I have found something. What do you think I should do about it?" Abdullah ibn Umar said to him, "publicize it!" He said, "I have done so". He said, "Do it again". He said, "I have done so". Abdullah said, "I do not order you to use it. If you wished, you could have left it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your findings by sharing them with others instead of keeping them for yourself.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who found something and went to Abdullah ibn Umar for advice. Abdullah ibn Umar advised him to publicize his finding, so that others may know of it. He then asked the man if he had done so, and when the man said yes, he told him to do it again. Finally, Abdullah ibn Umar said that if the man wished, he could have left the item instead of keeping it for himself. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous with our findings and not keep them for ourselves but rather share them with others in order to benefit society as a whole. It also teaches us that we should be honest in our dealings with others and not take advantage of them or try to deceive them in any way.
