Adornment During Mourning

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that a woman who trusts in Allah and the Last Day should not abstain from adornment in mourning for someone who has died, for more than three nights, except for four months and ten days for a husband.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Hazm from Humayd ibn Nafi that Zaynab bint Abi Salama related these three traditions to him. Zaynab said, "I visited Umm Habiba, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when her father Abu Sufyan ibn Harb had died. Umm Habiba called for a yellowy perfume perhaps khaluq or something else. She rubbed the perfume first on a slave-girl and she then wiped it on the sides of her face and said, 'By Allah! I have no need of perfume but I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'It is not halal for a woman who trusts in Allah and the Last Day to abstain from adornment in mourning for someone who has died, for more than three nights, except for four months and ten days for a husband'. "

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the Islamic ruling on adorning oneself during mourning. Umm Habiba, the wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was visited by Zaynab bint Abi Salama after her father Abu Sufyan ibn Harb passed away. Umm Habiba called for a yellowy perfume and rubbed it on a slave-girl before wiping it on the sides of her face. She explained that she heard Prophet Muhammad ﷺ say that it is not halal or permissible for a woman who trusts in Allah and the Last Day to abstain from adorning herself during mourning except when mourning her husband which lasts four months and ten days. This hadith teaches us to trust in God's will even when we are going through difficult times such as death of loved ones. It also teaches us to be mindful of our actions as Muslims since everything we do must be within Islamic guidelines or halal according to Shariah law.
