The Consequences of Divorce

SUMMARY: Divorcing a free wife twice makes her haram for the husband.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdu Rabbih ibn Said from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Harith at-Taymi that Nufay, a mukatab of Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked Zayd ibn Thabit for an opinion. He said, "I have divorced my free wife twice". Zayd ibn Thabit said, "She is haram for you".

QUICK LESSONS:
Take marriage seriously and consider consequences before taking any action in life .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of divorce. It was narrated by Yahya who heard it from Malik who heard it from Abdu Rabbih ibn Said who heard it from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Harith at-Taymi that Nufay asked Zayd bin Thabit for an opinion regarding his free wife whom he had divorced twice. Zaid bin Thabit replied that she was now haram for him and could not be remarried to him again. This hadith teaches us that divorce should be taken seriously and should only be done when absolutely necessary as divorcing a free wife twice makes her haram for the husband and they cannot remarry each other again.
