Exchange of Animals According to Value

SUMMARY: Umar ibn al-Khattab gave judgement on the exchange of animals based on their value.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'z-Zubayr that Umar ibn al-Khattab gave the judgement of a ram for a hyena, a female goat for a gazelle, a she-goat less than one year old for a rabbit, and a four month old kid for a Jerboa.

QUICK LESSONS:
Consider the value before exchanging things and take into account any differences in quality or quantity when making an exchange so that both parties are satisfied with it.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the judgement given by Umar ibn al-Khattab regarding the exchange of animals. He judged that a ram should be exchanged for a hyena, a female goat for a gazelle, a she-goat less than one year old for a rabbit and four month old kid for Jerboa. This hadith teaches us that we should always consider the value of things before exchanging them and not just go by what we think is fair or right. We should also take into account any differences in quality or quantity when making an exchange so that both parties are satisfied with it.
