Hair and Beard Maintenance During Hajj

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Umar would not cut his hair or beard until he had done hajj after finishing the fast of Ramadan.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that if Abdullah ibn Umar had finished the fast of Ramadan and intended to do hajj, he would not cut his hair or beard at all until he had done hajj. Malik said, "It is not necessary for people to do the same".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your pilgrimage by maintaining your current hairstyle/beard style while on Hajj.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of maintaining one's hair and beard during the pilgrimage to Mecca, known as hajj. It was narrated by Yahya, who heard it from Malik, who heard it from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar would not cut his hair or beard until he had completed his hajj after finishing the fast of Ramadan. This shows us that even though we are allowed to groom ourselves in other times, during this special time we should maintain our appearance as a sign of respect for this holy journey. We can also learn that although Abdullah ibn Umar chose to do this, it is not necessary for everyone else to follow suit; rather they can choose what works best for them in terms of grooming while still showing respect for their pilgrimage.
