(Book 20, Hadith 98) #35861
Performing Hajj on Behalf of Others

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a woman from the Khatha'ma tribe asking the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for a fatwa regarding her father's inability to perform Hajj. The Prophet (PBUH) allowed her to do Hajj on his behalf.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Sulayman ibn Yasar that Abdullah ibn Abbas said, "Al-Fadl ibn Abbas was riding behind the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when a woman from the Khatha'ma tribe came to him to ask him for a fatwa. Al-Fadl began to look at her, and she at him, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, turned Fadl's face away to the other side. The woman said, 'Messenger of Allah, Allah's making the hajj obligatory finds my father a very old man, unable to stay firm on his riding-beast. Can I do hajj for him?', and he said, 'Yes'. This was during the farewell hajj".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman who asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for a fatwa regarding her father's inability to perform Hajj due to old age. The Prophet ﷺ allowed her to do it on his behalf and this was during the farewell hajj. This hadith teaches us that we should help others in fulfilling their religious obligations if they are unable or incapable of doing so themselves due to any reason such as old age or illness etc. It also shows us how merciful and kind our beloved prophet ﷺ was towards people and how he always tried his best in helping them out with their problems even if it meant going out of his way for them.
