The Necessity of Intention for Fasting

SUMMARY: Intention to fast must be made before dawn in order for the fast to be valid.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to say, "Only some one who makes the intention to fast before dawn (actually) fasts".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make an intention before dawn when wanting to start a fast

EXPLANATIONS:
In Islam, fasting is an important part of worship and devotion. It is a way to draw closer to Allah and increase one's faith. According to this hadith from Abdullah ibn Umar, it is necessary for a person who wishes to fast that they make the intention before dawn or fajr time. This means that if someone wakes up in the morning and decides they want to fast that day but have not made the intention beforehand then their fast will not be valid. Making an intention before dawn is essential as it shows sincerity and dedication towards fasting as a form of worship.

The importance of making intentions can also be seen in other aspects of life such as prayer or charity work. It helps us stay focused on our goals and reminds us why we are doing something in the first place - whether it’s fasting or any other act of worship - so that we can reap its rewards both here on earth and in the hereafter.
