Obligation of Zakat al-Fitr

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad made it obligatory for every Muslim to pay Zakat al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan, which is a sa' of dates or barley.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, made the zakat of breaking the fast at the end of Ramadan obligatory on every muslim, whether freeman or slave, male or female, and stipulated it as a sa' of dates or a sa' of barley.

QUICK LESSONS:
Paying zakat al-fitri before performing eid prayer

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad made it obligatory for every Muslim to pay Zakat al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan. This is a form of charity that must be given before the Eid prayer on the day of Eid ul-Fitri. It is usually paid in kind such as a sa’ which is equivalent to four mudds or two kilograms and three hundred grams in weight. This can be paid in either dates or barley, depending on what is available locally. It should be noted that this obligation applies to all Muslims regardless of their gender, age or social status; everyone must give this charity before they perform their Eid prayer.
