Taking Jizya from Different People

SUMMARY: This hadith explains how the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, took jizya from different people.

Yahya related to me from Malik that Ibn Shihab said, "I have heard that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, took jizya from the magians of Bahrain, that Umar ibn al- Khattab took it from the magians of Persia and that Uthman ibn Affan took it from the Berbers".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains how the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, took jizya from different people. Jizya is a tax that non-Muslims living in an Islamic state have to pay in exchange for protection and security provided by the state. The hadith mentions that the Messenger of Allah took jizya from magians living in Bahrain, Umar ibn al-Khattab took it from magians living in Persia and Uthman ibn Affan took it from Berbers. This shows us that Muslims should be fair when collecting taxes or any other dues as they were doing during the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . It also teaches us to be just when dealing with people who are not Muslim as well as those who are Muslim. We should treat everyone equally regardless their religion or background.
