Refraining from Doing Something Out of Fear

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) refrained from doing something he loved to do, out of fear that people would follow him and it would become obligatory for them.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibn az- Zubayr that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "I never once saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, doing the voluntary prayer of duha, but I myself do it. Sometimes the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would refrain from a practice that he loved to do, fearing that people would do the same and it would become fard for them ".

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of refraining from doing something he loved to do out of fear that people would follow him and it would become obligatory for them. This teaches us the importance of being mindful and aware when we are engaging in activities or practices that could be seen as setting a precedent for others. We should always be conscious of our actions and how they may influence those around us. It also shows us the importance of being humble and not wanting to impose our own beliefs or practices on others. We should strive to lead by example rather than by force or coercion.

The Prophet Muhammad was an exemplary leader who was always mindful of his actions and their potential implications on those around him. He was humble enough to refrain from doing something he enjoyed if it meant avoiding making it compulsory for others who may not have been able to fulfill such obligations due to their circumstances or lack thereof. This hadith serves as a reminder that we should all strive towards leading by example rather than imposing our beliefs onto others without considering their individual situations first.
