(Book 8, Hadith 17) #35359
Following the Imam in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) fell off his horse and scraped his right side, so he prayed sitting and the people followed him in prayer. He then taught that when the Imam is appointed to lead prayer, it is obligatory to follow him in whatever position he prays.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Anas ibn Malik that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, fell off his horse when riding, and his right side was scraped, so he did one of the prayers sitting, and we prayed behind him sitting. When he left, he said, "The imam is appointed to be followed. If he prays standing, then pray standing, and when he goes into ruku, go into ruku, and when he rises, rise, and when he says, 'Allah hears whoever praises him,' say, 'Our Lord, praise belongs to You,' and if he prays sitting, then all of you pray sitting".

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey Allah's commands by following one's appointed leader during prayers ; Respect towards one's leader ; Pray together as a congregation .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of following an appointed imam during prayer. It is obligatory for Muslims to follow their imam’s lead when they are praying together as a congregation. If the imam stands up for prayer, then all those praying behind him should stand up too; if he bows down into ruku’, then everyone should bow down too; and if he prostrates himself on the ground, everyone should do likewise. Even if the imam decides to pray sitting down due to an injury or illness, all those praying behind him must also sit down and pray with him. This hadith reminds us of our obligation as Muslims to always obey Allah’s commands by following our appointed leaders during prayers.
