Different Ways of Praying Witr

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the different ways in which Abu Bakr, Umar and Said ibn al-Musayyab prayed witr.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that Said ibn al-Musayyab said, "Abu Bakr as-Siddiq used to pray witr when he wished to go to bed, and Umar ibn al-Khattab used to pray witr at the end of the night. As for me, I pray witr when I go to bed".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the different ways in which three prominent figures - Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, Umar ibn al-Khattab and Said ibn al Musayyab - prayed witr. Witr is a special prayer that is performed at night after Isha prayer and before Fajr prayer. It consists of an odd number of rakats or units of prayer, usually three or five rakats. According to this hadith, Abu Bakr used to pray witr when he wished to go to bed while Umar used to pray it at the end of the night. As for Said Ibn Al Musayyab, he would pray it when he went to bed. This hadith teaches us that there are various ways in which we can perform our prayers according to our own convenience and preference but we should always strive for consistency in our worship so that it becomes a part of our daily routine.
