The Importance of Wearing Oil and Perfume for Jumu'ah Prayer

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Umar would always wear oil and perfume when attending Jumu'ah prayer, except when he was in a state of Ihram.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar would never go to jumua without wearing oil and perfume except when it was forbidden (ie when he was muhrim).

QUICK LESSONS:
Wear appropriate attire for religious occasions like Juma’a prayer; Be mindful about one's actions at all times; Show respect towards religious occasions by adorning oneself with appropriate attire
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of wearing oil and perfume when attending the Friday prayer. It is narrated by Yahya from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar would never go to jumua without wearing oil and perfume except when it was forbidden. This means that even though it is not mandatory to wear oil or perfume for juma’a prayers, it is highly recommended as a sign of respect for the occasion. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us that we should be mindful of our actions during certain times such as during Hajj or Umrah where one must enter into a state of ihram which forbids them from wearing any type of fragrance or scent. Therefore this hadith serves as an important reminder to be mindful about our actions at all times and to show respect towards religious occasions by adorning ourselves with appropriate attire.
