Completing Prayers

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) was reminded by Dhu'sh-Shamalayn that he had forgotten to complete the prayer and he completed it.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Abu Bakr ibn Sulayman ibn Abi Hathma said, "I have heard that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, prayed two rakahs of one of the two day-ti me prayers, dhuhr or asr, and said the taslim after two rakas. Dhu'sh-Shamalayn said to him, 'Has the prayer been shortened, Messenger of Allah, or have you forgotten?' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'The prayer has not been shortened and I have not forgotten'. Dhu'shShamalayn said, 'It was certainly one of those, Messenger of Allah'. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, approached the people and said, 'Has Dh u'sh-Shamalayn spoken the truth?' They said, 'Yes, Messenger of Allah,' and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, completed what remained of the prayer, and then said, 'Peace be upon you'. "
وَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، قَالَ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِنْ إِحْدَى صَلاَتَىِ النَّهَارِ - الظُّهْرِ أَوِ الْعَصْرِ - فَسَلَّمَ مِنَ اثْنَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ لَهُ ذُو الشِّمَالَيْنِ أَقَصُرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمْ نَسِيتَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ‏"‏ مَا قَصُرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ وَمَا نَسِيتُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ذُو الشِّمَالَيْنِ قَدْ كَانَ بَعْضُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏.‏ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ أَصَدَقَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَقَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏.‏ فَأَتَمَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of completing prayers. It is narrated by Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Abu Bakr ibn Sulayman ibn Abi Hathma who said that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prayed two rakahs of one of the two day-time prayers and was reminded by Dhu'sh-Shamalayn to complete what remained of his prayer. The Prophet ﷺ asked if Dh u'sh-Shamalayn spoke the truth and when people confirmed it, he completed what remained of his prayer and then said 'Peace be upon you'. This hadith teaches us about how important it is for Muslims to complete their prayers as prescribed in Islam. It also shows us how we should remind each other in a respectful manner when someone forgets something or makes a mistake so they can correct themselves without feeling embarrassed or ashamed.
