Reciting Behind an Imam

SUMMARY: When praying behind an Imam, one should not recite if the Imam is reciting aloud. If the Imam is not reciting aloud, then one should recite.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar, when asked if anyone should recite behind an imam, said, "When you pray behind an imam then the recitation of the imam is enough for you and when you pray on your own you must recite". Nafi added, "Abdullah ibn 'Umar used not to recite behind the imam". Yahya said that he heard Malik say, "The position with us is that aman recites behind the imam when the imam does not recite aloud and he refrains from reciting when the imam recites aloud".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow your leader's lead while praying , Pay attention to what you are saying during prayer

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the etiquette of prayer when behind an imam. It states that when praying behind an imam, one should not recite if the imam is reciting aloud. If the imam is not reciting aloud then one should recite. Abdullah ibn Umar was asked about this and he said that when you pray behind an imam then the recitation of the imam is enough for you and when you pray on your own you must recite. The position with Malik was that a man should recite behind the imam when he does not recite aloud and refrain from doing so if he does so loudly. This hadith teaches us to be respectful in our prayers by following what our leader does in prayer rather than trying to outdo them or show off our knowledge of Quran verses or prayers by speaking louder than them or over them during prayer time. We must also remember to pay attention to what we are saying during prayer as it can be easy to get distracted while praying in a group setting with others around us who may be talking or making noise which can take away from our focus on Allah's words during prayer time.
