Purifying Without Water

SUMMARY: Women should not check their purity in the middle of the night, and if they cannot find water to purify themselves, they can do tayammum.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr from his paternal aunt from the daughter of Zayd ibn Thabit that she had heard that women used to ask for lamps in the middle of the night to check their purity. She would criticize them for this saying, "Women never used to do this," ie in the time of the companions. Malik was asked whether a woman whose period had finished could do tayammum to purify herself if she could not find waterand he said, "Yes, because she is like some one in a state of major ritual impurity, who, if he cannot find water, does tayammum".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for tradition, caution with actions, understanding religious rituals and practices .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how women should not check their purity in the middle of the night. It also explains that if a woman cannot find water to purify herself, she can do tayammum instead. Tayammum is a ritual where one strikes both hands on clean ground and then wipes their face and arms with it. This ritual is used when one does not have access to water or when one is in a state of major ritual impurity. The hadith also teaches us that we should be careful about our actions as it was something that was never done during the time of Prophet Muhammad's companions.
