Obligation of Ghusl After Intercourse

SUMMARY: A man asked A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, about a situation in which a man penetrates his wife but does not ejaculate. She replied that when the circumcised part passes the circumcised part ghusl is obligatory.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Said ibn al-Musayyab that Abu Musa al-Ashari came to A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said to her, "The disagreement of the companions in a matter which I hate to bring before you has distressed me". She said, "What is that? You did not ask your mother about it, so ask me". He said, "A man penetrates his wife, but becomes listless and does not ejaculate".She said, "When the circumcised part passes the circumcised part ghusl is obligatory". Abu Musa added, "I shall never ask anyone about this after you".

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek knowledge from reliable sources and follow Islamic rulings regarding purification through ritual washing/bathing after intercourse if no ejaculation occurs .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses an important Islamic ruling regarding intercourse between married couples. According to this hadith, if a man penetrates his wife and does not ejaculate, then he must perform ghusl afterwards. Ghusl is an Arabic term for ritual washing or bathing and it is obligatory after intercourse in order to purify oneself before engaging in other activities such as prayer or fasting. This hadith also highlights the importance of seeking knowledge from reliable sources; Abu Musa was distressed by disagreement among companions on this matter so he sought clarification from A'isha who was one of the most knowledgeable people at that time.
