Musnad Ahmad 1399, 1400 (Book 6, Hadith 18) #35022
Doubting Human Thoughts

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ was passing by some palm trees and saw people pollinating them. He expressed doubt about the effectiveness of this process, but later clarified that his thoughts were only human and not divine.

It was narrated from Simak that he heard Moosa bin Talhah narrate that his father said: I was with the Prophet and he passed by some palm trees of Madinah, and he saw some people at the top of the palm trees who were pollinating them. He said: "What are these people doing?' Talhah said: "They are taking (pollen) from the male and putting it in the female, to fertilize it". He said: 'I do not think this can help in any way". News of that reached them, so they stopped doing that and came down from the trees, which did not bear any fruit that year as a result. News of that reached the Prophet and he said: "It was only a thought that crossed my mind. If it helps in any way, then do it. I am only human, just like you, and thoughts may be right or wrong. But if I tell you that Allah, May He be glorified and exalted, said something, I will never tell a lie about Allah, may He be glorified and exalted". It was narrated from Moosa bin Talhah ( and he narrated a similar report) a similar report

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek knowledge before making decisions/expressing opinions .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about doubting one's own thoughts and ideas. It is narrated from Simak that he heard Moosa bin Talhah narrate that his father said he was with the Prophet (ﷺ) when they passed by some palm trees of Madinah. People were at the top of the palm trees pollinating them, which means taking pollen from male flowers to fertilize female flowers in order to produce fruit. The Prophet (ﷺ) expressed doubt about whether this process would help in any way, so they stopped doing it and no fruit grew on those trees that year as a result. However, he then clarified that his doubts were only human thoughts and not divine revelations or instructions from Allah; if it helps in any way then do it because he is only human like everyone else and can make mistakes or be wrong sometimes. This hadith teaches us to be careful when expressing our doubts or opinions because we are all humans who can make mistakes; if we say something based on our own understanding then we should clarify that it is just a thought rather than an instruction from Allah Himself. We should also remember to always seek knowledge before making decisions or expressing opinions so as not to lead ourselves astray with incorrect information or assumptions.
