Musnad Ahmad 1135 (Book 5, Hadith 551) #34777
Working Hard to Feed Hunger

SUMMARY: A man was so hungry that he worked for a woman in exchange for dates. He then shared the dates with the Prophet ﷺ and they ate together.

It was narrated that Mujahid said: 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: I got very hungry once in Madinah, so I went out to look for work in 'Awali al-Madinah. I saw a woman who had collected some mud and I thought that she wanted to add water to it. So I made a deal with her, for each bucket one date, I brought sixteen buckets full, until it left marks on my hands, then I went to the water and drank some. Then I came to her and opened my hands in front of her like this - Isma'eel spread his hands and put them together - and she counted out sixteen dates for true. Then I came to the Prophet and told him, and he ate some of them with me.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest when making deals or agreements; Take care of your own needs; Take care of other's needs whenever possible without compromising your own wellbeing too much; Share what you have with those less fortunate than you .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who was so hungry that he worked hard to get food in exchange for his labor. He went out looking for work and found a woman who needed help collecting mud, and he offered to help her in exchange for some dates. After working hard, he got sixteen buckets of mud and sixteen dates as payment. He then went to the water and drank some before going back to the woman with his hands open like Isma'eel did when telling this story, showing her how much work he had done. She gave him all sixteen of the dates as promised, which he then took to share with the Prophet (ﷺ). This hadith teaches us that it is important to be honest when making deals or agreements with others, even if it means working hard or going without food until you can get what you need from someone else's labor or resources. It also shows us how generous people can be when they are willing to share what they have with those who are less fortunate than them. Finally, it reminds us of how important it is not only to take care of our own needs but also those of others around us whenever we can do so without compromising our own wellbeing too much in order to do so.
