The Sunnah of Witr Prayer

SUMMARY: Witr is not obligatory, but it is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Allah loves odd numbers.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said. Witr is not a must, but it is a Sunnah from the Messenger of Allah and Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, is One and loves that which is odd numbered.
حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ إِنَّ الْوَتْرَ لَيْسَ بِحَتْمٍ وَلَكِنَّهُ سُنَّةٌ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وِتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوَتْرَ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us that performing the witr prayer is a sunnah, or an action that was practiced by Prophet Muhammad. It is not obligatory, but it is recommended to do so as it pleases Allah. Additionally, this hadith also mentions that Allah loves odd numbers. This means that when we are doing something in multiples of three or more, we should make sure to end with an odd number for example 3 or 5 instead of 4 or 6.
