Musnad Ahmad 769 (Book 5, Hadith 201) #34427
Naming Children After Prophets

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) changed the names of Ali's sons from Harb to Hasan, Husain and Muhassin, which were inspired by the names of the sons of Haroon.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: When al-Hasan was born, I named him Harb which means war, then the Messenger of Allah came and said: 'Show me my son; what did you name him?' We said: Harb. He said: 'Rather he is Hasan". When al-Husain was born, I named him Harb, then the Messenger of Allah came and said: "Show me my son; what did you name him?" We said; Harb. He said: "Rather he is Husain". When the third one was born, I named him Harb. The Prophet came and said: "Show me my son, what did you name him?" I said. Harb. He said: 'Rather, he is Muhassin'. Then he said: 'I have named them after the fashion of the sons of Haroon, Shabbar and Shabeer and Mushabbir".

QUICK LESSONS:
Take inspiration from prophets before us when naming our children with good intentions so they can receive blessings in this life and hereafter inshaAllah!

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Prophet Muhammad named three of his grandsons after prophets from before him. When 'Ali ibn Abi Talib's first son was born, he wanted to name him Harb which means war in Arabic. However, when Prophet Muhammad saw his grandson he said that instead he should be called Hasan. Similarly for his second son who was also going to be named Harb but instead was given the name Husain and for his third son who was also going to be named Harb but instead was given the name Muhassin. These names were inspired by the names of three sons of prophet Haroon; Shabbar, Shabeer and Mushabbir respectively. This hadith teaches us that we should take inspiration from prophets before us when naming our children as it will bring blessings upon them in this life and hereafter inshaAllah!
