Cursing of Unlawful Activities

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) cursed those who partake in activities such as consuming riba, paying riba, writing down riba, witnessing riba, divorcing a woman so that she becomes permissible for her first husband and the one for whom that is done, withholding zakah, doing tattoos and the one for whom tattoos are done.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: The Messenger of Allah cursed ten: the one who consumes riba, the one who pays it, the one who writes it down, the two who witness it, the one who marries a woman and divorces her so that she becomes permissible for her first husband, and the one for whom that is done, the one who withholds zakah, the one who does tattoos and the one for whom tattoos are done.
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ مُجَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي عَامِرٌ، عَنْ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ عَشَرَةً آكِلَ الرِّبَا وَمُوكِلَهُ وَكَاتِبَهُ وَشَاهِدَيْهِ وَالْحَالَّ وَالْمُحَلَّلَ لَهُ وَمَانِعَ الصَّدَقَةِ وَالْوَاشِمَةَ وَالْمُسْتَوْشِمَةَ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of avoiding certain activities which are considered unlawful in Islam. These activities include consuming or paying interest/usury known as ‘riba’ in Arabic; writing down usury; witnessing usury; divorcing a woman so that she becomes permissible for her first husband and the one for whom that is done; withholding zakah or charity payments; doing tattoos and getting tattoos. The Prophet Muhammad PBUH cursed those who partake in these activities. This hadith serves to remind Muslims to stay away from these unlawful acts as they will be punished by Allah SWT if they do not abide by His laws. It also serves to remind Muslims of their responsibility towards their fellow human beings by ensuring they pay their due charity payments and refrain from any form of exploitation or injustice against them.
