Musnad Ahmad 277, 278 (Book 2, Hadith 189) #33964
Seven Modes of Reciting the Quran

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught the Quran to Umar bin al-Khattab and when Umar heard someone reciting it differently, he brought him to the Prophet who then explained that there are seven modes of recitation for the Quran.

'Umar bin al-Khattab said: I heard Hisham bin Hakeem reciting Sooratul-Furqan in prayer in a manner other than I recited it, and the Messenger of Allah had taught it to me. I caught him by his garment and brought him to the Messenger of Allah , and said: O Messenger of Allah , I heard this man reciting Sooratul Furqan in a manner other than you taught it to me. The Messenger of Allah said: 'Recite it". He recited it in the manner in which I had heard him recite, and the Messenger of Allah said: 'Thus it was revealed". Then he said to me: 'Recite it". So I recited it and he said: "Thus it was revealed. This Qur'an has been revealed in seven modes of recitation, so recite whatever is easy for you'. It was narrated that al Miswar bin Makhramah and 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abdul-Qari heard 'Umar say: I passed by Hisham bin Hakeem bin Hizam when he was reciting Sooratul Furqan. and he mentioned a similar hadeeth.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught Umar bin al Khattab how to recite the Quran. When Umar heard someone else reciting it differently, he brought him to the Prophet who then explained that there are seven modes of recitation for the Quran. This hadith teaches us that we should not be quick to judge others if they do something differently than us because we may not know all of their reasons or circumstances behind their actions. It also teaches us that we should always seek knowledge from a reliable source before making any assumptions or judgments about something. Furthermore, this hadith shows us how important it is for Muslims to learn and understand how to properly recite and interpret the words of Allah in order for them to gain its full benefit in their lives.
