Breaking Fast at Nightfall

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that when the night comes from the east and day departs from the west, it is time for a fasting person to break their fast.

It was narrated from 'Asim bin 'Umar that his father said: The Messenger of Allah said: "When the night comes from here and the day departs from here, it is time for the fasting person to break his fast," meaning the east and the west,
حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِذَا أَقْبَلَ اللَّيْلُ وَقَالَ مَرَّةً جَاءَ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هَهُنَا وَذَهَبَ النَّهَارُ مِنْ هَهُنَا فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ يَعْنِي الْمَشْرِقَ وَالْمَغْرِبَ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about fasting during Ramadan. It is narrated by Asim bin Umar that his father said that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that when night comes from the east and day departs from the west, it is time for a fasting person to break their fast. This means that when it gets dark outside and you can no longer see the sun in the sky, then it is time to end your fast for that day. This hadith also teaches us about being mindful of our actions and following instructions given by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). We should be aware of our surroundings and take note of what time of day or night it is so we can follow this important teaching.
