Musnad Ahmad 67 (Book 1, Hadith 64) #33762
Fighting for Faith

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ commanded to fight people until they say La ilaha illallah, and if they do, their blood and wealth are safe from him. Umar asked Abu Bakr if he would fight those who apostatized, and Abu Bakr said he would not separate prayer and zakah, so they fought them.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say La ilaha illallah, and if they say it then their blood and wealth are safe from me, except in cases dictated by sharee'ah, and their reckoning is with Allah". When some people apostatized, ʼUmar said to Abu Bakr: Will you fight them when you heard the Messenger of Allah is say such and such? Abu Bakr said: By Allah, I will not separate prayer and zakah, and I shall certainly fight anyone who separates them. So we fought them alongside him and we realized that that was the right thing to do.

QUICK LESSONS:
Believe in God , uphold prayer & zakah together

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of faith in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad was commanded by Allah to fight those who did not believe in Him until they said “La ilaha illallah” which means “there is no god but Allah”. If someone says this phrase then their blood and wealth will be safe from the Prophet Muhammad except in cases dictated by Islamic law. Ultimately it is up to Allah to judge them for their actions. Umar asked Abu Bakr if he should fight those who apostasized even though the Prophet had said what he did, but Abu Bakr decided that it was right thing to do because prayer and zakah should not be separated as these are two important pillars of Islam that must be upheld together.
