Musnad Ahmad 18 (Book 1, Hadith 18) #33716
The Importance of Ansar and Quraish in Islam

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of the Ansar and Quraish in Islam, and how Abu Bakr reminded people of what Prophet Muhammad said about them.

It was narrated that Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman said: When the Messenger of Allah died, Abu Bakr was in some other area of Madinah. He came and uncovered his face and kissed him, and said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you; how good you look in life and in death. Muhammad has died, by the Lord of the Ka'bah. Then Abu Bakr and 'Umar came together to the people, Abu Bakr spoke and did not omit anything that was revealed concerning the Ansar or that the Messenger of Allah had said concerning them but he mentioned it. And he said: You know that the Messenger of Allah said: 'If the people were to walk in one direction and the Ansar were to walk in another, I would walk in the direction of the Ansar'. I know, O Sa'd, that the Messenger of Allah said, when you were sitting here: 'Quraish are to be in charge of this affair (Islam), so the righteous people are but followers of the righteous of (Quraish), and the wrongdoers among the people are but followers of the wrongdoers of (Quraish)'. Sa'd said: You have spoken the truth: we are advisers and you are leaders.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of both the Ansar and Quraish in Islam. The Ansar were a group of people from Madinah who helped Prophet Muhammad when he migrated there from Makkah. They provided him with shelter, food, protection, and support during his time there. On the other hand, Quraish were a tribe from Makkah who were known for their wealth and power. When Prophet Muhammad passed away, Abu Bakr reminded people that he had said that if they ever walked in one direction while the Ansar walked in another direction then he would walk with the Ansar. He also mentioned that it was revealed to him that Quraish should be put in charge of this affair as they are righteous people while wrongdoers among them are followers of wrongdoers among them too. Sa'd then responded by saying that they will be advisers while they will be leaders which shows how important both groups are for Islam's success.
