Weeping and Pretending To Weep

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised people to cry if they are unable to, then pretend to cry.

It was narrated from Sa’d bin Abu Waqqas that the Messenger of Allah said: 'Weep, and if you cannot weep then pretend to weep".
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ بَشِيرِ بْنِ ذَكْوَانَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو رَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ ‏ "‏ ابْكُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ تَبْكُوا فَتَبَاكَوْا

It also teaches us that we should not be ashamed of expressing our emotions, even if it means pretending or faking them in order for us to feel better. It is important for us as humans, especially children, not bottle up their feelings but instead find ways of expressing them in a healthy manner so that we can learn from our experiences and grow as individuals.
