Sahih al-Bukhari 3493, 3494 (Book 61, Hadith 5) #3337
Religious Knowledge and Hypocrisy

SUMMARY: The best people in pre-Islamic and Islamic times are those who have religious knowledge, while the worst are hypocrites who show different faces to different people.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "You see that the people are of different natures. Those who were the best in the pre-lslamic period, are also the best in Islam if they comprehend religious knowledge. You see that the best amongst the people in this respect (ie ambition of ruling) are those who hate it most. And you see that the worst among people is the double faced (person) who appears to these with one face and to the others with another face (i.e a hypocrite).

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for Religious Knowledge

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of religious knowledge and how it can make a person better. It also talks about hypocrisy, which is when someone pretends to be something they're not or shows different faces to different people. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that the best people in pre-Islamic and Islamic times are those who have religious knowledge, while the worst are hypocrites who show different faces to different people. This hadith teaches us that we should strive for religious knowledge so that we can become better Muslims, but also warns us against being hypocritical or pretending to be something we're not. We should always strive for honesty and sincerity in our actions so that others can trust us.
