Sunan Ibn Majah 3874 (Book 34, Hadith 48) #33228
Seeking Allah's Protection Before Bedtime

SUMMARY: This hadith encourages us to be mindful of our actions and to seek Allah's protection before going to bed.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that: the Messenger of Allah (SAWS) said: "When anyone of you wants to go to bed, let him undo the edge of his Izar (waist wrap) and dust of his bed with it, for he does not know what came to it after him. Then let him lie down on his right side and say: 'Rabbi bika wada'tu janbi wa bika arfa'uhu, fa in amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima hafizta bihi 'ibadikaas-salihin (O Lord, by Your leave I lie down and by Your leave I rise, so if You should take my soul then have mercy on it, and if You should return my soul then protect it as You protect Your righteous slaves)".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith encourages us to be mindful of our actions and seek Allah's protection before going to bed. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instructed us that when we are about to go to sleep, we should loosen the waist wrap and dust off the bed with it, as we do not know what has come onto it after us. We should then lie down on our right side and recite a prayer asking for Allah’s mercy if He takes away our soul, or His protection if He returns it back. This hadith reminds us that no matter how small an action may seem, such as dusting off a bed before sleeping, we should always remember that everything is in the hands of Allah SWT and ask for His guidance in all matters.
