Changing Names for Self-Praise

SUMMARY: The Prophet changed the name of a woman from Barrah to Zainab because she was praising herself.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that: "Zainab used to be called "Barrah" (good), and it was said that she was praising herself. So the Messenger of Allah changed her name to Zainab".

QUICK LESSONS:
Rely on God for any good deeds or qualities you may have; Give thanks and praise only to God; Do not boast about yourself or your accomplishments; Remember all blessings come from God alone; Do not take credit for anything other than what God has given you.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of not praising oneself. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that a woman named Zainab used to be called Barrah, which means “good” in Arabic, and it was said that she was praising herself. So the Messenger of Allah changed her name to Zainab in order to remind her not to praise herself and instead rely on Allah for any good deeds or qualities she may have. This hadith teaches us that we should not boast about ourselves or our accomplishments, but rather give thanks and praise only to Allah for any good we may have done or achieved. We should also remember that all blessings come from Allah alone, so we should never take credit for anything other than what He has given us.
