Responding to Greetings with Peace and Mercy

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received a greeting from the angel Jibrail and responded with peace and mercy of Allah.

It was narrated from Abu Salamah that 'Aishah told him that the Messenger of Allah said to her: "Jibrail send (greetings of) Salam to you". She said: "Wa 'alahisalam wa rahmatullah (and upon him be peace and mercy of Allah)".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ زَكَرِيَّا، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ، حَدَّثَتْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ ـ قَالَ لَهَا ‏ "‏ إِنَّ جِبْرَائِيلَ يَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكِ السَّلاَمَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَتْ وَعَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ

This hadith is about responding to greetings with peace and mercy. It was narrated by Abu Salamah that Aishah told him that the Messenger of Allah said to her that Jibrail sent his salutations. She responded by saying “Wa 'alaihisalam wa rahmatullah” which translates to “and upon him be peace and mercy of Allah”.
