The Significance of White Garments

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised people to wear white garments and use them to shroud the dead.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said: "The best of your garments are the white ones, so wear them and shroud your dead in them".
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ، أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ الْمَكِّيُّ، عَنِ ابْنِ خُثَيْمٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ ‏ "‏ خَيْرُ ثِيَابِكُمُ الْبَيَاضُ فَالْبَسُوهَا وَكَفِّنُوا فِيهَا مَوْتَاكُمْ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of wearing white garments. It was narrated by Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said that the best type of clothing is white clothing and it should be used for shrouding a dead body. Wearing white clothes has many benefits such as it reflects light and keeps us cool in hot weather. It also symbolizes purity and cleanliness which are important values in Islam. Furthermore, using white cloth for burial is a sign of respect for the deceased as it shows that they were loved by their family members even after death. Thus this hadith teaches us to wear clean clothes and respect our deceased loved ones by burying them with dignity using white cloths.
