The Prohibition of Wine

SUMMARY: Drinking wine is prohibited and it is not a cure for any illness.

It was narrated that Tariq bin Suwaid Al-Hadrami said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, in our land there are grapes which we squeeze (to make wine). Can we drink from it?’ He said: 'No.’ I repeated the question and said: 'We treat the sick with it.’ He said: 'That is not a cure, it is a disease.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the prohibition of drinking wine in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked if it was permissible to drink wine from grapes that were grown in their land. He replied that it was not permissible to do so and repeated the question when he was asked if they could use it as a medicine for treating illnesses. He replied that this would not be a cure but rather a disease itself. This hadith teaches us that alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited in Islam and should never be used as a form of medicine or treatment for any illness or ailment.
