Intoxicants and the Lawfulness of Small Amounts

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that even small amounts of intoxicants are unlawful.

It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu’aib, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah said: "Whatever causes intoxication in large amounts a small amount of it is (also) unlawful".
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ ـ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that even small amounts of intoxicants are unlawful according to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Prophet Muhammad's teachings were based on a moral code which was meant to protect people from harm and ensure their well-being. In this hadith he is teaching us that even if something is not considered an intoxicant in large amounts it can still be harmful in smaller doses and should therefore be avoided. This hadith serves as a reminder for us to stay away from anything that could potentially cause harm or intoxication no matter how small the amount may be.
