Sunan Ibn Majah 3170 (Book 27, Hadith 9) #32524
Excellence in All Things

SUMMARY: Allah has prescribed excellence in all things, and one should take care to kill or slaughter animals humanely.

It was narrated from Shaddad bin Aws that the Messenger of Allah said: "Allah has prescribed Al-Ihsan (proficiency) in all things. So if you kill, then kill well, and if you slaughter, then slaughter well. Let one of you sharpen his blade and spare suffering to the animal he slaughters".

QUICK LESSONS:
Take care when killing or slaughtering animals; Sharpen blades before use; Strive for excellence in all things.

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad taught that Allah has prescribed excellence in all things. This means that whatever we do should be done with the utmost care and attention to detail. For example, if one is killing or slaughtering an animal for food then they should take care to sharpen their blade so as to cause the least amount of suffering possible for the animal. This hadith teaches us that even when doing something as mundane as killing an animal for food we must still strive for excellence and not be careless about it.
