Sacrificing Cows in Times of Scarcity

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad commanded people to sacrifice cows when camels became scarce.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "Camels became scarce at the time of the Messenger of Allah , so he commanded them to sacrifice cows".
حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ، عَنْ أَبِي حَاضِرٍ الأَزْدِيِّ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ قَلَّتِ الإِبِلُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ ـ فَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يَنْحَرُوا الْبَقَرَ

EXPLANATIONS:
During the time of the Prophet Muhammad, camels were a valuable resource and were used for many purposes. However, due to scarcity of camels at one point in time, the Prophet Muhammad commanded people to sacrifice cows instead. This hadith teaches us that we should be willing to make sacrifices and use alternative resources when needed. We should also be mindful of our resources and not take them for granted as they may become scarce at any given time. Furthermore, this hadith shows us that we should always follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as he was sent by Allah as a guide for mankind.
