Sunan Ibn Majah 3109 (Book 25, Hadith 228) #32463
Sacredness of Makkah

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) declared that Makkah is sacred and its trees, game, and lost property should not be disturbed or taken except for Idhkhir which can be used for houses and graves.

It was narrated that Safiyyah bint Shaibah said: "I heard the Prophet delivering a sermon in the Year of the Conquest (of Makkah), and he said: 'O people, Allah made Makkah sacred the day He created the heavens and the earth, and it is sacred until the Day of Resurrection. Its trees are not to be cut, its game is not to be disturbed, and its lost property is not to be taken except by one who will announce it.’'Abbas said: 'Except for Idhkhir (a kind of fragrant grass), for it is (used) for houses and graves.’ The messenger of Allah said: 'Except for Idhkhir.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the sanctity of Makkah. It was narrated by Safiyyah bint Shaibah that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) delivered a sermon in the Year of Conquest declaring that Allah made Makkah sacred from the day He created the heavens and earth until the Day of Resurrection. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also declared that its trees should not be cut, its game should not be disturbed, and its lost property should not be taken except by one who will announce it. Abbas then added an exception to this rule - Idhkhir - which can be used for houses and graves. This hadith teaches us about respecting places considered holy by Muslims as well as being honest when finding someone else's lost property.
