Sunan Ibn Majah 3089 (Book 25, Hadith 208) #32443
Killing Harmful Animals in Ihram

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) allowed people in Ihram to kill certain animals such as snakes, scorpions, predators, dogs and mice if they are harmful.

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed that the Prophet said: 'The one in Ihram may kill the snake, the scorpion, the aggressive predator, the vicious dog and the harmful mouse". It was said to him: "Why is it said that they are harmful?" He said:* "Because the Messenger of Allah woke up because of one, and it had taken the wick (of the lamp) to burn down the house".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be careful around potentially dangerous creatures; Kill an animal only when necessary and done with mercy .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the permission given by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for people who are in a state of iḥrām to kill certain animals such as snakes, scorpions, predators, dogs and mice if they are mafsadah or harmful. This was said after it was asked why these animals were considered harmful and the Prophet ﷺ replied that he woke up because of one of them which had taken the wick of a lamp to burn down his house. This shows us that we should be careful around these animals even though we may not be able to see any harm from them at first glance. We should also remember that killing any animal is only permissible when it is necessary and done with mercy.
