Sunan Ibn Majah 2943 (Book 25, Hadith 62) #32297
Kissing the Black Stone out of Respect

SUMMARY: 'Umar bin Khattab kissed the Black Stone despite knowing it was just a stone and could not bring any benefit or harm, because he had seen the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) do it.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Sarjis said: "I saw the bald forehead of 'Umar bin Khattab when he kissed the Black Stone and said: 'I am kissing you, although I know that you are only a stone and you can neither cause harm nor bring benefit. Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah kissing you, I would not have kissed you.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow good examples set by elders; Respect what they do; Be humble before Allah's power
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how 'Umar bin Khattab respected and followed the example of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). He saw that the Prophet had kissed the Black Stone, so he did too even though he knew it was just a stone and could not bring any benefit or harm. This shows us that we should respect what our elders do, even if we don't understand why they are doing it. We should also follow their example in good deeds as much as possible. It also teaches us to be humble and to remember that Allah is all powerful and can bring both benefit and harm without needing help from anything else.
