Maintaining Religious Commitment and Dignity

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised the leaders of troops to maintain their religious commitment, dignity and the end of their deeds.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "When the Messenger of Allah would dispatch troops, he would say to the leader: 'I commend to Allah’s keeping your religious commitment, your dignity and the end of your deeds.’"
حَدَّثَنَا عَبَّادُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، حَدَّثَنَا حَبَّانُ بْنُ هِلاَلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مِحْصَنٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِذَا أَشْخَصَ السَّرَايَا يَقُولُ لِلشَّاخِصِ ‏ "‏ أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِينَكَ وَأَمَانَتَكَ وَخَوَاتِيمَ عَمَلِكَ

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was known for his wise counsel and advice. This hadith is an example of such advice given by him to the leaders of troops before they were dispatched. He advised them to maintain their religious commitment, dignity and the end of their deeds. This means that they should be mindful in all aspects, from how they conduct themselves in battle to how they treat others with respect even if it is a difficult situation. They should also strive for excellence in all that they do so that when it comes time for judgement, Allah will be pleased with them. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us about the importance of maintaining our dignity even when faced with difficult situations or challenges as this is something that Allah looks upon favorably.
