Sunan Ibn Majah 2588 (Book 20, Hadith 56) #31942
The Punishment of Stealing and Praising Allah

SUMMARY: A man stole a camel and was punished by having his hand cut off. He praised Allah for purifying him from the sin of stealing.

It was narrated from Abdur-Rahman bin Tha’labah Al-Ansari, from his father, that Amr bin Samurah bin Habib bin Abd Shams came to the Messenger of Allah and said: "O Messenger of Allah ! I stole a camel belonging to Banu so-and-so; purify me!" The Prophet sent word to them and they said: "(Yes), we have lost a camel of ours". So the Prophet ordered that his hand be cut off. Tha'labah said: "I was looking at him when his hand fell and he said (to it) 'Praise is to Allah (SWT) Who has purified me of you; you wanted to cause my whole body to enter Hell'.''

QUICK LESSONS:
Repent sincerely when you commit sins such as theft; accept whatever punishment is given with patience; praise Allah for His mercy in forgiving your sins; remember that no matter how severe your punishments may be they are nothing compared to what awaits you in the hereafter if you do not repent before it is too late.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who stole a camel belonging to another tribe. When he confessed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about what he had done, the Prophet ﷺ ordered that his hand be cut off as punishment for stealing. Despite this harsh punishment, the man praised Allah for purifying him from this sin. This hadith teaches us that we should not commit sins such as theft and if we do so then we must repent sincerely and accept whatever punishment is given to us with patience and gratitude towards Allah for His mercy in forgiving us our sins. We should also remember that no matter how severe our punishments may be in this life they are nothing compared to what awaits us in the hereafter if we do not repent sincerely before it is too late.
