Sunan Ibn Majah 2538 (Book 20, Hadith 6) #31892
The Benefits of Legal Punishment

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that a legal punishment carried out in a land is better for the people of that land than if it were to rain for forty days.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "A legal punishment that is carried out in the land is better for the people of that land than if it were to rain for forty days".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow laws; enforce punishments fairly; show mercy when punishing someone who has broken a law; bring healing through forgiveness instead of resentment or revenge; seek justice instead of revenge.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of justice and mercy. It was narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said “A legal punishment that is carried out in the land is better for the people of that land than if it were to rain for forty days.” This means that when laws are enforced and punishments are given fairly and justly, it can be more beneficial to society than even natural blessings like rain. Rain brings life-giving water but justice brings peace and security which can be even more valuable. This hadith reminds us how important it is to have laws in place so everyone knows what they should do or not do, as well as what will happen if they break those laws. It also encourages us to be merciful when punishing someone who has broken a law because mercy can bring healing and forgiveness instead of resentment or revenge.
