Sunan Ibn Majah 2281 (Book 12, Hadith 145) #31633
Fair Trade in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised a Jewish man to sell his produce at a fair price and not to take advantage of the situation of the newly converted Muslims.

It was narrated from Muhammad bin Hamzah bin Yusuf bin 'Abdullah bin Salam, from his father, that his grandfather 'Abdullah bin Salam said: "A man came to the Prophet and said, 'The tribe of Banu so-and- so, who were descended from the Jews, have become Muslim, and they are starving, and I am afraid that they may apostatize'. The Prophet said: 'Who has something with him?' A Jewish man said: 'I have such and such, and he named it, and I think he said three hundred Dinar for such and such 'an amount (of produce) from the garden of the tribe of Banu so-and-so'. The Messenger of Allah said: 'For such and such a price at such and such a time, but not from the garden of the tribe of Banu so-and- so"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be fair when trading with others; Help those in need whenever possible; Strive for justice and compassion towards all people regardless of their religion or background; Follow Allah’s commands found within The Quran .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fairness in trade and justice for all people regardless of their religion or background. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was approached by a man who was concerned about the newly converted Muslims from Banu so-and-so who were starving and may apostatize due to their lack of resources. In response, the Prophet asked if anyone had something with them that could help these people out. A Jewish man offered some produce from his garden for sale at a fair price, but the Prophet advised him not to take advantage of this situation by selling it at an unfair price or taking it from the garden of Banu so-and-so as they were already struggling financially. This hadith teaches us that we should always be fair when trading with others and never take advantage of someone else's misfortune or poverty for our own gain. We should also strive to help those in need whenever possible as this is what Allah has commanded us to do in His Holy Book, The Quran.
