Sunan Ibn Majah 2258 (Book 12, Hadith 122) #31610
Exchange of Like Items Prohibited

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the prohibition of exchanging like items if extra is given.

It was narrated that Abu Jawza' said: "I heard him meaning Ibn 'Abbas allowing exchange (of Dirhams for Dirham etc., if extra was given) and that was narrated from him. Then I heard that he has taken back this opinion. I met him in Makkah and said: 'I heard that you had taken back (your opinion)'. He said: 'Yes. That was just my own opinion, but Abu Sa'eed narrated from the Messenger of Allah that he forbade exchange (of like items if extra is given)"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Referring to Islamic teachings for guidance before making any decisions or opinions on our own

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the prohibition of exchanging like items if extra is given. It was narrated by Abu Jawza', who heard Ibn 'Abbas allowing exchange and then taking back his opinion. When he met him in Makkah, he asked him about it and Ibn 'Abbas confirmed that he had taken back his opinion because Abu Sa'eed narrated from the Messenger of Allah that he forbade exchange if extra was given. This hadith teaches us to be careful when making decisions as we should always refer to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ before making any decisions or opinions on our own. We should also be aware that even though we may have an opinion on something, it may not necessarily be correct according to Islamic teachings and so we must always refer back to them for guidance.
