Sunan Ibn Majah 2167 (Book 12, Hadith 31) #31519
Forbidden Items & Cursing of Jews

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forbade the sale of certain items such as wine, meat from dead animals, pigs and idols. He also cursed the Jews for melting and selling animal fat despite it being forbidden by Allah.

Ata' bin Abu Rabah said: I heard Jabir bin 'Abdullah say: "In the Year of the Conquest, while he was in Makkah the Messenger of Allah , said: 'Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of wines, meat of dead animals, pigs and 'idols'. It was said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of the fat of dead animals, for it is used to caulk ships, it is daubed on animal skins and people use it to light their lamps?' He said: 'No, it is unlawful'. Then the Messenger of Allah said: 'May Allah curse the jews, for Allah forbade them the fat (of animals) but they rendered it, (ie melted it) sold it and consumed its price"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey God's commands; Respect religious laws; Avoid sins/prohibited items/actions .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of certain items by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. These items include wine, meat from dead animals, pigs and idols. The Prophet ﷺ also cursed the Jews for melting and selling animal fat despite it being forbidden by Allah. This hadith teaches us that we should not consume or sell any item that has been prohibited by Allah or His Messenger ﷺ as it is a major sin in Islam to do so. We should also be mindful of our actions as even if something may seem permissible to us, it may still be prohibited in Islam due to reasons we are unaware of. Furthermore, this hadith reminds us that we should not disobey Allah's commands no matter how small they may seem because disobedience can lead to severe consequences both in this world and hereafter.
