Sahih al-Bukhari 3294 (Book 59, Hadith 103) #3150
Fear of Allah's Messenger (PBUH)

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the respect and fear that Umar had for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and how it was greater than the fear of the women present.

Narrated Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas: Once 'Umar asked the leave to see Allah's Messenger in whose company there were some Quraishi women who were talking to him and asking him for more financial support raising their voices. When 'Umar asked permission to enter the women got up (quickly) hurrying to screen themselves. When Allah's Messenger admitted 'Umar, Allah's Messenger was smiling, 'Umar asked, "O Allah's Messenger ! May Allah keep you in happiness always". Allah's Messenger said, "I am astonished at these women who were with me. As soon as they heard your voice, they hastened to screen themselves"'.Umar said, "O Allah's Apostle! You have more right to be feared by them". Then he addressed (those women) saying, "O enemies of your own souls! Do you fear me and not Allah's Messenger ?" They replied".Yes, for you are a fearful and fierce man as compared with Allah's Messenger ". On that Allah's Messenger said (to 'Umar), "By Him in Whose Hands my life is, whenever Satan sees you taking a path, he follows a path other than yours".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to us about the importance of respecting and fearing Allah's Messenger Muhammad ﷺ. Umar was a fierce man who commanded respect from those around him. However, when he asked permission to enter a room where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was present with some Quraishi women they were so scared that they quickly got up to cover themselves. When Umar asked why they were scared of him more than Prophet Muhammad ﷺ they replied that he was more fearsome than him. The Prophet then said “By Him in Whose Hands my life is, whenever Satan sees you taking a path, he follows a path other than yours” which means that if we follow in his footsteps then we will be able to stay away from evil temptations like Satan does when it sees Umar taking a righteous path. This hadith teaches us about respecting and fearing Allah's Messenger ﷺ as well as following his example in order to stay away from evil temptations like Satan does when it sees Umar taking a righteous path.
