Sunan Ibn Majah 1807 (Book 8, Hadith 25) #31159
Rules of Zakat for Sheep

SUMMARY: The hadith explains the rules of Zakat for sheep, and how it should be paid in proportion to the shares of each partner. It also states that the Zakat collector should not accept any decrepit or defective animal, nor any male goat unless he wishes to.

Ibn Umar narrated that: the Messenger of Allah said: "For forty sheep, one sheep up to one hundred and twenty. If there is one more. Then two sheep, up to two hundred. If there is one more, then three sheep, up to three hundred. If there are more than that, then for every hundred one sheep. Do not separate combined flock and do not combine separate flocks for fear of Sadaqah. Each partner (who has a share in the flock) should pay in proportion to his shares. And the Zakat collector should not accept any decrepit or defective animal, nor any male goat, unless he wishes to".

QUICK LESSONS:
Pay your due share fairly according to what you own; Give donations even if its something small like an old animal which may no longer be useful for you but can still provide sustenance for someone else who needs it more than you do .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the rules of paying Zakat on sheep. According to this hadith, if a person has forty or fewer sheep then they must pay one sheep as their Zakat payment. If they have between forty-one and one hundred and twenty then they must pay two sheep as their payment. Similarly if they have between one hundred and twenty-one and two hundred then three sheep must be paid as their payment. For more than three hundred animals a person must pay one animal per every hundred animals in their flock as their payment. The hadith also states that partners who share ownership over a flock should each pay according to their respective shares in it. Additionally it is mentioned that the collector of this tax should not accept any decrepit or defective animal nor any male goat unless he wishes to do so himself. This hadith teaches us about being fair when paying taxes on our possessions; we are expected to give our due share according to what we own without trying to cheat or deceive anyone else involved in this process by combining separate flocks together or separating combined flocks apart so as not reduce our tax burden unfairly . It also teaches us about being generous with those who are less fortunate than us by giving them donations even if it is something small like an old animal which may no longer be useful for us but can still provide sustenance for someone else who needs it more than we do .
