Sunan Ibn Majah 1722 (Book 7, Hadith 85) #31074
Celebrating Eid with Fasting Forbidden

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forbade fasting on the days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, as they are days of celebration and feasting.

It was narrated that Abu 'Ubaid said: "I was present for 'Eid with 'Umar bin Khattab. He started with the prayer before the sermon, and said: 'The Messenger of Allah forbade fasting on these two days, the Day of Fitr and the Day of Adha. As for the Day of Fitr, it is the day when you break your fast, and on the Day of Adha you eat the meat of your sacrifices.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Celebrate Eid with family & friends; Remember Allah's blessings; Enjoy special occasions; Break fast during Ramadan; Sacrifice for Allah's sake

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Abu 'Ubaid states that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forbade fasting on two special occasions - the Day of Fitr and the Day of Adha. The Day of Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, when Muslims break their fast after a month-long period. On the other hand, Adha is a day to celebrate sacrifice in remembrance of Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail for Allah's sake. As such, these two days are meant to be celebrated with joy and feasting rather than fasting. This hadith serves as an important reminder that we should not forget to enjoy these special occasions with our families and friends while also remembering Allah's blessings upon us.
